I love picture books that make me laugh! There is certainly a time and a place for moving and inspirational picture books, but to be quite honest, if I know I am going to read a book over and over and over and over, I want it to be one that I am going to enjoy too. If you are looking for a fabulously funny picture book that will delight readers from 5 to 95, look no further than The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors by Drew Daywalt. Daywalt is already know for his humorous titles like The Day the Crayons Quit and its sequel The Day the Crayons Came Home, so it was no surprise that this title cracked me up on my first and fifth reads. The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors is an epic tale about epic battles told in an epic way, presenting a fictional history for the popular children’s hand game “Rock, Paper, Scissors.” For early elementary readers, this is a fantastic peek into dramatic storytelling, as Daywalt uses a “folk tale” format to whisk readers away to a world within our own. Using anthropomorphic household items, drawn expertly by Adam Rex, the ordinary becomes extraordinary. Paper, Rock, and Scissors battle their way through a quiet suburban home, which children will find very similar to their own. The text is fast paced, exciting, funny and perfect for squirmy or reluctant readers too. And of course, once you are done reading, you and your child can enjoy many rounds of their new favorite game, “Rock, Paper, Scissors!”
